First Week in Copenhagen

I have been here for roughly over a week now, and it is safe to say that I love it here. This past week, I took a Danish language course. Over the week, I learned basic phrases, biking etiquette, traditional dishes, how to order, and more about Danish culture. For example, Dansk Vand is directly translated as Danish Water. However, this is Sparkling water. So if you want just water, you must look for Still Vand.

There are a couple of things that surprised me at first. One was the bathroom situation. It is super common to have the toilet near the shower. However, there is no divider between the two. So on my first night, water was splashed all over the floor and walls. But they gave me a squeegee to help guide all water to the drain. So every night after I shower, I have to clean the bathroom floor with the squeegee. I guess it is good, but it is very tedious.

The second thing is that you can drink the tap water. I am quite picky with what water I drink. I was going to buy a case of bottled water but didn't need to because tap water is okay to drink. It doesn't taste bad at all. The thing that shocked me was that restaurants charge you for water. Back home, water is free, but they charge about $3 (depending on the place).

I feel like a big part of Copenhagen is characterized by the environment. Every place I went, there were at least three different bins with labels, categorizing where waste goes. It is quite interesting. They call them factors and based on what you are throwing out, you can find a label on the product, showing which bin it belongs in.

After landing in CPH and settling in, I met with two other people from my dorm. We ate Shawarma at this place close to our dorm. Where we live, there are a lot of Middle Eastern food places near by.
